About Amherst

Amherst is a small village in the eastern part of Portage County. The population of Amherst is around 1,030 residents.

The village is home to the Portage County Fair that takes place mid-July every year. The fair features tractor pulls, a demolition derby, vacation raffles, and much more. The fair also has live music every night for that added summer night experience. The Portage County Fair of Amherst is an event you won’t want to miss!

Amherst is also home to the Central Waters Brewing Company, which was started in 1996 and expanded to Amherst in 2007. Today, Central Waters Brewing Co. is in more than 200 retail locations across the state. Central Waters has many different seasonal and year-round beers on offer including IPAs, stouts, and ales. The brewery offers free tours on Fridays at 5 P.M. making it a great place to relax and try some beers after work.

Amherst’s food selection is sure to please everyone. The Ambrosia Pub & Grill serves up great food with daily specials including multiple options for Friday fish frys, Tuesday stir frys, and a Wednesday Pizza Buffet. Whether you’re passing through or live in the area, Ambrosia is a must go. For a hidden gem of a supper club, try The River’s Bar & Supper Club right off US-10 on County Road KK. The trees on the highway make it hard to see, but once you walk in you’re in for a treat. The menu offers some of the traditional supper club items such as fish and prime rib, but offers reasonably priced drinks and somewhat larger portions. It is definitley worth the detour from the highway.
